Amorphophallus

The genus Amorphophallus is a member of the Aroid family (Araceae). Currently, almost 200 species are recognized. These are known, both from Africa and Asia. None are known from the Americas.
All species have an underground storage organ that is usually tuberous but in some cases also rhizomateous.
Many species grow in partly seasonal climate some of these requiring a dormancy period during the dry season, while others e.g. from Indonesia are almost evergreen and should never be kept dry.

There are true giants, such as Amorphophallus titanum, while others are dwarfs, such as the tiny and beautiful Amorphophallus ongsakulii.

Most are easy growers, absolutely fascinating and very rewarding. Apart from very few more picky ones, most can be grown in the house (maybe except from a short time during flowering....!) without a need for special precautions, such as a greenhouse.
