Heliamphora spec. nov. "Akopan"

This curious Heliamphora grows on the forested slopes of Akopan Tepui at elevations of 1800-1900m in open clearings along water courses. Although it appears similar to H. heterodoxa, it does possess some unusual characteristics. For one, its foliage is proportionately larger and with a broader pitcher opening. And though its nectar spoon is similarly helmet shaped, in at least half of all individuals in the wild (and most in cultivation) it is reduced to a narrow, flat, strap-shaped structure which is red and smooth. This does also occur in some populations of H. heterodoxa but much more rarely. Very unusual!

In cultivation this plant is very handsome and easily distinguishable from H. heterodoxa. It is an easy, steady grower that remains somewhat solitary. The short retentive hairs that line the interior of the pitcher opening are highly reflective and give the plant a pleasant sheen.

Recommended addition!
